SYTYCD Top 6

Our Top 6:
Jakob
Ashleigh
Ellenore
Ryan
Kathryn
Russell

First Up:
Kathryn and Ryan - Samba
So, when they started, I thought it was a little rough. They were tentative in their steps instead of deliberately slow but then when they did that second assisted spin into a more sped up pace it was much better for me. I think Ryan did a really good job in his own style - The throw over the head onto the back was great, but the African Anteater dance just before threw me off so I had to go watch it again.

Next Up:
Ellenore and Jacob - Broadway
Okay, so everyone is going probably going to boo me - but I didn't like that at all. I've never liked the "Fosse" style and so really for me it was the choreography that I just didn't get into. So, I'm sure other people think I'm crazy but I couldn't get past the style to even critique the dancing - which I'm sure was wonderful - but again... not a fan.

Next Up:
Russell and Ashleigh - Lyrical Jazz
I have never seen Ashleigh look so beautiful and serene. There's one moment where they do a close up on her face and the lyric is "you're never nothing less than beautiful" and in that moment, that feeling is shining out of her so clearly. Really one of her most lovely moments. And don't get me started on Russell. He did an amazing job. One of the softest Sonya pieces I think I remember ever seeing.

Switch it up:

Ellenore and Ryan - Jazz
So - while this is not my particular cup of tea - I actually got to appreciate Ellenore more than I did in her Broadway routine. It suited her so much more I think. So while I didn't "enjoy" the routine itself, I at least got to enjoy her in it.

Ashleigh and Jakob - Foxtrot
I don't like the side ponytail or her dress at all! Still, they did an effortless job. I love their chemistry together - I think they are really such a good pairing.

Russell and Ellenore - Passo Doble
I'm thinking why isn't he dancing with Kathryn - because that should be the logical next pairing. But now that I'm off that - I love the dress. Some really good moments for Russell - he definitely does strong really well for me. Not one of my favorite routines - but not bad.

Jakob and Kathryn - Contemporary
Okay - so this is going to sound horrible too... I miss Mia. That was a lot of cool tricks but none of the emotion that I get from a Mia Michaels piece. I didn't get teary at all. Okay - so now I'm going to go back and watch it again and see if I can get something more from it. Nope - Great unison - great dancing - great spins and leaps and steps and jumps and musicality - but no great emotion. Am I the only one that feels this way?

Ryan and Ashleigh - Contemporary
Now that is what I'm talking about. That is Travis Wall in those steps - it was beautiful. Their connection was so important - so central to the piece - the music tied in to the choreography so perfectly. They were in such sync together and when he rocked her and it was so gentle and loving - I cried. For me - that is what the Jakob and Kathryn piece missed. And I know there are people out there who aren't fans - but I really love Ashleigh and I would be so pleased if she won.

Kathryn and Russell - Hip Hop
Okay - that's the most I've liked Kathryn all night. Legacy taught her well. She was hitting just as hard as Russell - and they did great. Again - not my most favorite Hip Hop routine of all season - but still really liked it.

Okay - so I have no idea who's going to win - but I'm not going to lie - my vote is

SYTYCD - Top 8

(Maggie had to tell me this was the Top 8, not the Top 6... I knew that next week is the finale - which has always been the top 4 till now - but apparently for whatever reason, we're going next week from 6 to 1. I believe it's because there isn't enough talent for the top 4 to warrant a 2 hour finale show on their own... Maggie thinks it's because they wanted to wrap it up before Christmas week. What are your thoughts?)

Okay, so let's begin!

Top 8:
Ryan
Ellenore
Jakob
Kathryn
Russell
Mollee
Legacy

Wait... where is Ashleigh?

Oh no! She popped her shoulder out and the stupid doctor won't clear to dance.

Squeaker Squeak and Ryan:
R: not disco!
M: It's not the disco - it's Doriana Sanchez.
R: Nice pants
M: I think Michael's is out of spangles.
R: Who bedazzled them? That must have taken FOREVER.
M: How many tiny Chinese children did they use? That requires tiny foreign fingers.
R: Way to go with the alliteration.

Next up: Gal pals Mollee and Jakob
R: And we have a waltz... that'll be fun.
M: I like her styling in this - she reminds me of Molly - you know, Molly-Molly.
R: Ah, Mary Molly Keeley Cheeley Hicks!
M: Indeed
R: F'n A. So I'm just so underwhelmed.
M: She's just so stiff. I wish she'd grab his butt.
R: no thanks.
M: Judges are on crack tonight. That just wasn't very good.

Ashleigh is 1-888- Tempo 01
That's 1-888-83676-01

Ellenore and Legacy:
R & M (IN UNISON!): Yay TRAVIS!!!!
R: So, war of the roses fighting couple?
M: Yeah. I like her leg bend.
R: I am distracted by that thing on her leg!
M: It would be cool if she had a knife or a gun in it but it seems kind of random all on it's own. Crunch! (sorry, eating chips and salsa in your ear)
R: Oh! oh oh oh oh oh! Mr. & Mrs. Smith!
M: Ohhhhhhyeah. I see it now.
R: okay, so I'm gonna watch it back, because I am distracted by the sexy and the leg thing and the...
M: Creepy.
R: yes. - so second time around, liked it better. Enjoyed the jump over/under table and the headstand into a sexual position on top of the table.
M: Wait, I thought this was a family show!
R: well... it is America.
M: True.
R: You know when I see Travis, I think of beautiful, poignant, angsty choreography... not sex and death.
M: It was very "He had it coming" Or Sonya and Mandy Moore had a love child. It just wasn't Travis.
R: Nigel I would like to give you props for Danger - you old English coot.

Jakob solo -
M: His shorts make me crazy and his top makes him look like he's got boobs!
R: His legs are sick though!
M: Yes, but his clothes are distracting.
R: Yes.

Next Up: Russel and Ashleigh
R: Did you notice that this is twice he's lost a partner to injury.
M: Yeah, he's bad luck. Wait, with Ashleigh out, is Shane going to step in?
R: I would love to see that.
M: No, we have Rachel - his assistant.
R: But she's not that good. Are we sure she's not his Ass-istant?
M: sooooo wrong.
R: what?
M: Moving on... Russell was pretty awesome.
R: He was. He hits SO HARD!
M: I wish I could have seen Ashleigh do this.
R: me too!

Mollee Solo:
M: It was Mollee being Mollee - so cute but eh.

Kathryn and Ryan:
R: Hot outfit.
M: For both of them.
R: The fringe is helping her butt.
M: I think she might go this week.
R: Her and Ryan both.
M: This doesn't seem like a cha cha.
R: Oh!
M: Neat ending.
R: They're all standing?
M: I don't get it. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't awesome.

Legacy Solo:
R: So that was gimmiky. I preferred last weeks solo soooooooo much more.
M: That wasn't that great Cheekbones McGee.

Ellenore Solo:
R: Is she saving her energy for something else?
M: Yeah, I like the song, but all the solo's for me are just eh tonight.

Russell 's Solo:
M: Russell the love muscle - lost his shoe... I don't think it was on purpose.
R: Eh.

Mollee and Jakob doing Broadway:
M: It's Joey the Mean Choreographer!
R: Yeah, don't like her. But let's see how this works out.
M: Great I'm gonna have that song in my head for three days!
R: So, I think she's a little stiff.
M: No. He's Gumby. See the back of that vest, that's not fabric, that's his skin showing through.
R: whatever. I would have preferred to see Squeaker Squeak do this one.
M: Yeah, I think it wasn't Squeaker Squeaks week for choreographers.
R: *Sigh*
M: Indeed.
R: F'n A. So, overall?
M: Wasn't bad. Wasn't amazing.
R: yeah.
M: Gumby was good, but pokey never gets to shine...
R: Moving on.

Kathryn Solo:
R: So that's the first solo I've liked all night.
M: I concur.

Legacy and Ellenore with Nappy-Tabs routine.
R: I didn't get it at all. It was ok. Not the best.
M: I liked the part with the masks the best.
R: I did as well.
M: I think Ellenore was misfiring - maybe a timing issue.
R: Yeah, the costumes for me were very sort of.
M: Meh.
R: Exactly. Thankfully they have that other number which even if people didn't like it, was at least memorable.
M: It showcased their goodies.

Ryan's Solo:
R: Gay strip club, here I come!
M: Very salsa cheerleader...

Next Up Russell:
M: I would have really liked to seen Ashleigh do that.
R: Yeah, me too. I think she would have been really good at that.
M: It makes me mad every time I think about it. I'm going to have to vote for her.
R: I do agree with Nigel that my eyes stayed on Russell instead of the professional woman dancing with him.

Vote:
M: I think it might be Legacy and Squeaker Squeak going home.
R: I think it's going to be Ryan and Squeaker Squeak (or Mollee) going home.
M: I would be okay if Ryan went home.
R: I would hate to see Ashleigh go home.
M: There's always a chance though since she didn't dance.
R: I know - so I'm gonna go vote for her.
M: Me too!

Top 10

Okay, so I'm on my own again. This week my computer is working and so I can actually write about the show...

Let's get started, shall we?

Couples have been broken up. Girls pick their partners out of the hat.

First up: Noelle and Ryan
ummmmmmmmmmm.... wow. That was.... steamy. I was not prepared for it to get straight to it, but wow. I actually watched it again, to make sure I wasn't being fooled by the hairography... but it was one of the best hip-hop routines this season I think. Ryan was a bit stiff, but Noelle was really good. Good way to start the night.

Next: Ashleigh and Legacy
ummmmm.... so that was not my cup of tea at all. That was a little too something for me - artsy, interpretive, techno filled.... I guess they did a good job. They definitely gave it everything they had. Okay, so the playback during Mary's critique had no music and I found myself paying attention to the steps, so I went back and watched it without the music. That was really amazing. Once I took away the distraction of the music and focused on the dance - I was super impressed. They did a really great job.

Mollee Solo - really good. Love her hair like that - she should be in Grease.

Russell Solo - I LOVES IT! Tempo zero 2 people!

Next: Squeaker Squeak and Nathan
I really enjoyed that a lot. That was the best Broadway number I think they've had all season. It doesn't hurt that I absolutely adore that song (from the movie White Christmas if you didn't recognize it). Kathryn looked absolutely beautiful - she was perfection for me in the dance. I really didn't pay much attention to Nathan - so I'm gonna watch it again. So, is it just me or does he seem to be a tad older without Mollee? He suits that wholesome era that they were trying to evoke perfectly.

Noelle Solo - She really always dances for her life. She's got great legs - her feet are beautiful and she's a great dancer.

Next: Ellenore and Jakob
Okay, so the quickstep is usually the kiss of death. I think they did a really good job. I almost miss the pre-packaged video footage before the dance so you could really get something more memorable to help make people want to pick up the phone and vote at the end.

Ryan Solo - He would make a fortune in a gay strip club.

Kathryn Solo - Lovely.

Next Up: Mollee and Russell:
So... I didn't hate it. I thought the choreography was beautiful, I liked the song choice, we know I love Russell and I don't hate Mollee - but something was missing. It just didn't make me feel what I knew it was supposed to make me feel. There was no loss, no longing, no believable yearning. I just was left slightly disappointed. It was danced well, I just wanted more.

Nathan Solo - Okay, I'm going to sound heartless here for a second, but the tears on the video... did they feel contrived to anyone else after all the comments this season about not coming off as likable in his clips? Just me? Okay, moving on to the dancing - which was... interesting...

Next up: Noelle and Ryan
Smooth Waltz's can be hard, but hopefully they'll get votes from the hip hop earlier. Personally, I thought it was just beautiful and I loved it. Sort of soft and dreamy - very elegant - and that dress - in the spin.... oh so lovely.

Ellenore Solo - she is so quirky. Such a unique dancer.

Next up: Ashleigh and Legacy
Really?!?! Vampire cheeze factor was not helpful. If they could stop making it harder for Legacy I would appreciate it. That was just... bad. But if they had the same choreography with a different story - say... a preppy girl and a bad boy... that would have worked with the song and not been completely stupid. Sorry, I'm ranting because I feel like they were robbed by cheese. I thought Ashleigh moved really well, I think Legacy struggled because of the stupid cape and campiness of the whole thing.

Next: Kathryn and Nathan:
I wasn't impressed with this one - the lack of chemistry was so completely apparent that it was almost painful to watch - especially since the dance really required it.

Legacy Solo - Seriously?!?!? Could he be any more awesome. I mean he's a B Boy with freaking musicality and lyrical movement in his solo... I'm a convert - Legacy all the way. LOVE HIM!
(oh, and I believe in his tears)

Next: Ellenore and Jakob
The size of the stage really sort of took away from this one. I felt like it would have been so much more impactful if it had been sort of less space around the conflict of their movement. LOVED the end position.

Ashleigh Solo - So if a girl is gonna win it this year - it better be her. I mean, I wasn't a fan of her during auditions, but she just really has grown on me so much - and it doesn't hurt that she's kind of kicking butt and taking names...

Next: Mollee and Russell
Russell is awesome. He's got legs made of rubber. That was such a fun jive.

Jakob Solo - horrible distracting shorts - amazing legs.

So... who should go home?

I think Nathan should go home... but it could be Jakob or Ryan - depending on audience votes. As for the girls I think Mollee should go but it could be Kathryn or Ellenore or even Noelle if they don't connect with the audience...

My prediction: Nathan and Kathryn will both go home. I guess we'll find out tomorrow.
